America’s Finest Bicycle Tour is coming up fast in October 9-12th. An overnight camping bike ride sounds pretty badass but also a little terrifying for those of us who haven’t done it before. We touched base with ride organizer, Tim, to learn more.
What is AFBT?
America’s Finest Bicycle Tour is a supported tour through San Diego County. This means riders will be able to ride without carrying a significant amount of gear and weight. Each morning and evening a meal will be prepared or catered that will include local produces, as well as local beers and wines at dinner. The ride is designed to accommodate both riders who are new to bicycling camping as well as those who’ve done it before.
Why combine biking and camping?
Biking and camping can be an enjoyable way to travel. It allows you to see more terrain and experience different things. Doing a ride like this enable people to feel more comfortable with bicycle camping and learn to pack their own gear and travel further distances.
How difficult is this going to be? Can I ride my beach cruiser? Do I need clip-ins and spandex?
The ride will have some challenging terrain. Three days include mileages around 40+. So it is important to have a basic level of fitness and cycling competency. A beach cruiser would not be recommended. However, one would be able to complete and enjoy the ride on a good hybrid bike without clip-in pedels or spandex. But it doesn’t hurt to have a little extra padding on your ass.
Is there beer?
So far we have Modern Times on board to provide beer and are working out details with more breweries. We anticipate having one or two choices each night and different beers from night to night.
Anything else you want to add?
We anticipate this is going to be a lot of fun and encourage people to come out! Additionally, the ride will benefit Bike SD and their continued work to improve cycling infrastructure and transportation options throughout San Diego.
The whole thing sounds pretty badass. You had us at “Modern Times.”
